"I can't even express how much I love this book! I didn't want this story to end!"--Reese Witherspoon

"Painfully beautiful."--The New York Times Book Review

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.

Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

The story started off strong. Character development and story development was beautiful. But to be honest, the plot took several unnecessary turns, the dialogue was mediocre, forced, and at times laughable. The end also trailed off quite a bit. I felt the story was over but the book kept going on and on in a very uninteresting way. The idea behind the story line was great but ultimately I feel it was poorly executed.

Such a great book, I’m so sad I finished it !

Really enjoyed this book! Keeps you interested until the end. Highly recommend.

Just simply amazing one of the best books I have ever read through and through

I enjoyed how beautifully a life can become from such sorrow and depths of misunderstandings. Brave, self sufficient, captivated by Nature, and shown small inklings of kindness, our wild heroine makes believers of us all in what we can overcome, and sometimes the tragic lengths we will go to achieve peaceful twilight years.

good.

LOVED this read!! A reminder of the strength we all carry...

I absolutely loved this book, from the characters, the story and descriptions of the area, to the deep southern dialect! It drew you into the story and the surroundings and didn’t let you go until the very last line! Such a great read!

Did not want to put the book down. The marsh and its inhabitants were brought to life with all its beauty and joy. One cannot help loving and rooting for Kya throughout. Just read it!

Such a great book! Could not put it down! Read it in 3 days!

What a strong start to a story with a lot of beautiful descriptions of nature that fell apart midway through..... The plot deteriorated as the author hurried through to show the character’s brief triumph & the plot suddenly devolves into an unbelievable murder mystery with a predictable & unsatisfying ending.

The way the author describes the characters and settings pulls you in and makes you fall in love with this story. Loved it!

My now favorite book. Amazing.

What an incredible book!

Started off a bit slow but so worth the read!!

Was skeptical before reading and even once I started...however I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Made me think a lot about isolation and being devoid of connections...as many of us are now in the pandemic. Worth the read.

This book caught my heart and I was laughing and crying until the very end! So well written and clever.

This is by far the best book that I’ve read this year, maybe the best book I’ve ever read. I could not put it down. I cannot wait until they make a movie based on this book.

A spellbinding story intertwined with a lovely description of the North Carolina coastal marshes. Some the the description/metaphors were a bit awkwardly written and as a long time resident of the South Carolina “Lowcountry”, the descriptions were not quite on target. However following the young Kya’s journey through life was a wonderful tale and my eyes were moist as the tale came an end although the little discovery at the very end was faintly unsatisfying and hurt my heroine image of this remarkable young woman, Kya.

Could not keep a dry eye, this book moved me. Every chapter captivated me, very well written!!

This is in my top 5 books for 2020. A great read and so well written! I truly enjoyed reading this book.

The world needs more stories like this; stories of the grit of survival, heart tender under a fragile shell of hardness, poetic justice of sweet sweet Sister Karma and the beauty of our amazing planet. This will be a classic in my library to be revisited often as comforting as creamy grits and hot biscuits.

This book is phenomenally written. I laughed, I cried, I got angry and sad but nonetheless it was worth every page turn. I would have loved for Kya and Tate to have a family but I guess nothing fully good happens to her only partially. Still a great book.

I had started reading this over a year ago and couldn’t get into it at the time. I am so glad I picked it up again! Such a well written book and the writing is top notch. I grew up in California and have never been around marshlands but now I feel like I have. The story itself is quite good. I can see why It may be made into a movie.

Beautifully written.

Oh my word! This book is so awesome.

Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Fantastic story.

So well written. Great story line. Highly recommend

Exquisite

This was a most excellent read. I could not put the book down, I was intrigued through every page. I would reccomend this to any genre reader because it’s just SO good.

beautiful story .. captivating from start to finish. i loved the writing style - it really created an emotional connection. one of my new favorites of all time!

i'd heard of the book through friends, and recently a friend let me borrow it. i finally got a chance to start reading it today annnnd finished it all today! it was beautifully written and so captivating. she kept the chapters short, which for me, makes reading so much easier. this needs to be a movie.

This book is a phenomenal read. Mysterious, romantic, and thrilling all at the same time. Best book I’ve read in 2020.

I loved it so much that I had to to share it with as many people as I could. Every time some finished reading it We couldn’t wait to talk about it, and then I passed it on the next person. I loved the ending and it made me want to live in the marsh! I highly recommend it!

Very well written, such an easy read. 10/10!!!

An absolute work of art. I read it in a week. I just finished it and cried in awe of the whole story out together so beautifully, I didn't want it to be over. I'm not much for fancy descriptions and words I feel like I should probably look up instead of imagining the definition of, but keep reading, you will without a doubt get sucked in and love living in the marsh right there with this perfect character. Amazing. 10 out of 10.

So gripping... I couldn’t put this book down! Absolutely amazing story!

I loved every page. I waited to read this and almost didn't because of all the attention it received. I was convinced it would disappoint after hearing so much hype. I was so very wrong! I love this book!!

Read this book in one day. Emotional, enlightening, and beautifully written.

I’m in love with this book 📖📚

My favorite book this year. Definitely deserving of all the recognition it’s getting.

I couldn’t put this book down! The book was excellent from beginning to the last sentence.. well written and a great story..

Best read of the year.

Great story. Beautifully written. I couldn’t put it down.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time, definitely my top 10 favorites! Really great read!

The author’s prose is beautiful enough that you might overlook this as being fantastically unrealistic and... boring. I can’t understand why it has been so popular.

This was a really great story.

This book disappointed me. Trying to read it was hard because of the accent and they way is was written. Then the ending was years crammed on 5 pages, very rushed and the ending just wasn’t believable. Disappointed.

this book is so so so so good!!!! highly recommend!!! one of the best books i’ve read in a long time!
